Teams working to transform teaching will begin at different starting points and move at different speeds. The purpose of a playlist is to ensure that while collaborating with CityBridge, all teams are able to follow a similar equity-centered process on the way to piloting substantive new configurations of school that remake the roles of educators.

The playlist should bring coherence to the work for teams moving along different pathways. Teams can demonstrate readiness for different phases of CityBridge Transforming Teaching programs through the following work and artifacts. By the end of the playlist, teams will be well-prepared to build pilots.

This 3-min video introduces the playlist and how it supports teams:

Before joining the Design Workshops, teams should complete the work for Stages 0, 1, and 2. This should take approximately 5 to 7 hrs, depending on the size of the team working on it.

Stage 0 and beyond

Teams can complete this work independently, with light-touch guidance from CityBridge. We say “and beyond” for the artifacts in each stage because teams will return to many tools and steps along the way as they learn more and refine their work.

  1. Design Principles: Understand the Transforming Teaching design principles in order to identify pain points and opportunities in the construction of educator roles. These principles will guide work throughout the program. Estimate: 30 min.
  2. Interviews Understand how people experience their work in schools by building relationships and cultivating understanding. Focus on those who are most marginalized. Estimate: 2-3 hrs (but varies based on # of interviews).
  3. Further Evidence-Gathering and Research: Get a holistic understanding of challenges and compliment interviews with additional sources of qualitative and quantitative data. Estimate: 1 hr.
  4. Analyze Evidence: Gathering evidence is separate from analyzing evidence. Teams making sense of information must also pause to construct equity-centered insights. Estimate: 1 hr, in collaboration with teammates.

Stage 1 and beyond

Teams can complete this work independently, with light-touch guidance from CityBridge.

  1. Define Problems Equitably: The way that we define problems can either maintain the status quo, lock in deficit-based thinking, and perpetuate inequitable systems—or it can disrupt inequities and get at the root causes of those problems. Estimate: 30-45 min, in collaboration with teammates.

Stage 2 and beyond

Teams can complete this work independently, with light-touch guidance from CityBridge.

  1. Understand Design Partner Models : Explore a variety of existing models for transforming teaching. Get inspired by the work of schools and model provider organizations around the country. Identify elements of existing models that are compelling and have the potential to address challenges in your community. Estimate: 2-3 hrs of reading/watching, but can be divided among teammates.
